The Primrose Ratepayers Association (PRA) has launched a petition urging residents to oppose the growing number of liquor outlets in the area, citing concerns over community well-being and safety.

The association argues that the high density of liquor establishments is contributing to neighbourhood decay and posing risks to the quality of life for residents.

The petition calls on local authorities to take immediate action to address the following issues: the closure of non-compliant liquor outlets, strict enforcement of existing laws and by-laws, increased transparency, and improved public health and safety.

David-Hutch Barr, vice chairperson of PRA, emphasised that the problem is not only the number of liquor stores but also the negative impact these businesses have on the community.

“The surge in liquor outlets has raised concerns about increased noise, public disturbances, and a decline in safety,” he explained.

According to Barr, Primrose now has 56 licensed liquor outlets within a 4.3-acre area, which exceeds the Liquor Board’s regulations and poses significant challenges for residents.

Local residents, like Sizakele Mahlangu, share these concerns.

“We understand liquor outlets serve a demand, but the sheer number is overwhelming. There’s more litter, noise, and disturbances linked to these stores,” she said.

Hutch Barr also highlighted the economic impact, noting that the concentration of liquor stores is deterring other types of businesses from setting up in the area.

“The area’s reputation suffers due to noise, crime, and public intoxication, making it less attractive to investors and other businesses,” he said.

In addition, property values in Primrose have been negatively affected. Barr noted that homeowners are finding it difficult to sell or rent properties in the area due to the proximity of liquor outlets.

“Potential buyers and tenants are often put off by the negative aspects associated with living near so many liquor stores.”

The PRA is urging residents to sign the petition, stressing the importance of taking a stand against the increasing number of liquor outlets and the challenges they bring to the community.
