She saw the need to clean up the area surrounding the school and also have the learners and staff working together.

The first event saw them pick up litter from the pavements surrounding the school on Heidelberg and Bloemhof streets.

The newly elected leaders for grades seven and 12 for 2024 were at the forefront of the project.

“Many hands make light work. The learner and staff managed to clean up the area within two hours in intense heat. Around 100 black bin bags were filled, as well as five bags for glass recycling.

“It made a visible difference to both sides of the streets surrounding the school. It was a remarkable achievement,” said Arlene Damons, an occupational therapist at the School of Achievement.

The launch was also attended by EMPD, who assisted in managing traffic and ensuring the safety of the learners.

Damons said they hope to inspire other schools in the area to embark on similar ventures.

“This will improve the aesthetic look of our communities at large,” said Damons.
