New recruits join the fight against crime in Ekurhuleni

Intelligence gathered by recruits will inform future metro police operations

The City of Ekurhuleni announced on September 5 the employment of 1 200 community safety marshals to assist in the fight against crime.

Community Safety MMC Sizakele Masuku instructed the new recruits to be vigilant against crime and suspicious activity as they patrol the streets of Ekurhuleni.

“These men and women will become critical in the collection of data and intelligence which will inform future EMPD operations.

“They will also focus on social ills in communities and act as a bridge between the community and the metro on issues of crime,” Masuku said.

The recruitment of the marshals is part of the Presidential Employment Programme.

“Our objective is to create employment in line with the programme and we are trying to create a safer Ekurhuleni.

“A child must feel safe in their community and so must be the oldest person in the same vicinity,” Masuku said.

She urged communities reclaim their environments from criminals.

“We must take back our streets and I urge members of the community to work closely with the new marshals because crime is a societal problem that needs everyone’s input,” she said.
