193 suspects busted by local police during operation

Law enforcement arrested 42 suspects for being undocumented and issued 103 traffic fines valued at R 42 400 to motorists.

Some 193 suspects were arrested after the multi-disciplinary Operation Shanela started last week.

Led by the Ekurhuleni deputy district commissioner, Brigadier Lebohang Machakela, the operation began on the evening of August 9 and ended on August 10.

Senior SAPS management, law enforcement agencies, the Edenvale CPF and security companies joined Machakela.

Officers spoke to shop owners to learn some of their concerns regarding crime.

Ekurhuleni district corporate communication officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela said the 147 suspects were arrested for various crimes after detectives traced them.

She said the main operation continued in the Edenvale policing precinct on Thursday and saw the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies work under Machakela in a roadblock in Edenvale.

Sekgobela said law enforcement arrested 42 suspects for being undocumented and issued 103 traffic fines valued at R 42 400 to motorists.

“One suspect was arrested for dealing dagga and another for the possession of dagga,” she said.

An additional suspect was arrested for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle and another for the possession of a stolen motorcycle

After the roadblock was complete, they did a walkabout in Greenstone Shopping Centre.

Sekgobela said they did it for stakeholders to interact with the community, determine what crimes affected shop owners and shoppers and create police visibility.

Machakela appealed to the community to be vigilant and report criminal activities in their areas.

He commended all who took part in the operation.
