Ekurhuleni remains on high alert to respond to cholera cases

Locals are urged to not drink water from possible hazardous sources such as rivers, dams, and streams unless is treated.

Although there have been no known cases of cholera in the City of Ekurhuleni since February, citizens are reminded to handle water and other liquids for consumption with caution.

This comes after the National Department of Health urged the public to remain watchful as the cholera death toll continues to rise, claiming the lives of at least 47 individuals across the country.

Spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the City of Ekurhuleni’s outbreak response teams are on high alert for the discovery of any cholera cases.

This is in response to the National Department of Health’s warning to citizens in the affected regions and increasing demands for immediate assistance from unions and civil society.

“In preparation for the re-opening of public schools for the third term, plans are in place to increase health education and promotion to empower communities and schools,” Dlamini said.

To prevent possible infection, members of the public are asked to avoid known or suspected contamination of food, water, and surfaces and to thoroughly wash hands with soap before handling food or using the bathroom.
