Local organisation knits to celebrate Mandela Day

Wooligans, a newly formed community group led by Bedfordview resident Lorrayne Mac Naughton, is gearing up for the 67 Minutes for Mandela Day.

On June 24, Mac Naughton held a knitathon at Bedfordview Primary School to make a difference through their knitting and crochet skills.

In just under a month, 20 people joined the group, creating 15 blankets and 17 scarves.

She said the 67 Bankets Local Blankets is Lekka tour showcased at Jeppe High for Girls on June 3 inspired the initiative.

“It was during this event that our Ward Clr Jill Humphreys expressed her concern about the lack of involvement from Bedfordview, igniting the spark that led to forming the Bedfordview Wooligans,” Mac Naughton explained.

As they prepare for Mandela Day, they will collaborate with the 67 Blankets initiative for the secret scarf campaign.

“During this campaign, individuals across the country hang scarfs adorned with name tags and heartwarming messages in random locations,” she said.

To support this endeavour, the group will work alongside the Bedfordview Methodist Church, known for its substantial soup kitchen operation, to distribute some of its scarves to those in need.

Mac Naughton urged the community to support the initiative, stating the group contributed to various causes and imparted valuable skills to individuals wanting to learn how to knit.

She invited knitters, crochet enthusiasts and school learners to contribute.

Wooligans welcome corporate sponsors interested in donating wool or contributing in other ways.
