East Rand Youth Orchestra wows fans at festival

Repertoire included the Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of Animals performed in two piano duets.

Fans were mesmerised by the harmonious sounds of the East Rand Youth Orchestra (ERYO) during their Concerto Festival at the EJ Butler Auditorium on June 10 and 11.

Dressed mostly in black, with a few ladies adding colour to complement the group’s sartorial elegance, the orchestra members wowed the audience with perfect performances.

Conductor Pienaar Fourie explained Saint Saens’ Carnival of Animals to the audience. It was performed separately by Marie Naude with Isabella Martins and Naomi and Laylah van Straaten.

The repertoire on day one included the Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of Animals performed in two piano duets.

First, Marie Naude and Isabella Martins performed the intro, lions and the Van Straaten siblings, Naomi and Laylah, executed the pianists.

“It’s a magnificent and wonderful composition full of joy and humour,” said conductor Pienaar Fourie.

The East Rand Youth Orchestra’s Concero Festival took place on June 10 and 11.

It also featured soprano solos by Crystal Willemse, who performed Memory from Cats, and Climb Every Mountain was performed by Megan du Plessis. Hailey Orren performed Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel’s aria, Bist Du Bei Mir.
