Locals urged to make donations for a blanket drive

Edenvale Knitwits and 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day has called on the community to donate wool, knitted squares or homemade blankets to help those in need.

The community members have been asked to do this at any of the donation boxes at Eastgate.

Ambassador for 67 Blankets and Edenvale Knitwits Kiley Cassel said 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day and Scoin Shop have partnered up.

Edenvale Knitwits and 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day’s Kiley Cassel, who called on community members for donations of wool, knitted squares and blankets.

Under the banner Kindness is the Golden Thread 1 300 balls of wool were donated to the NPO to be created into blankets.

As part of the initiative, Kiley explained that Kindness is the Golden Thread donation boxes will be ready to collect donations of wool, squares and blankets across the shopping centre.

It was launched on April 25 and all community members need to do to help the NPO is to donate.

Kiley explained that all the donations will be used to make blankets, which will be donated back to 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day and the pool of blankets for the Johannesburg roadshow.

Kiley said the roadshow will be held at Jeppe High School for Girls on June 3 between 11:00 to 15:00.

All the blankets which are made will be displayed on the school’s field.

The roadshow, which will be a family day, will see five of the Johannesburg-based 67 Blankets groups come together.

Charities which will benefit from the blankets made by Edenvale’s Knitwits include Abraham Kriel Bambanani, Edenangels and Beacon of Hope.

Kiley said all of the work being done is in preparation for Mandela Day, which is central to the foundation.

Speaking about the importance of people joining the campaign Kiley said it is to assist those in need.

“We would also like those in need and those who need blankets to reach out to us,” she said.

Being community-based Kiley said it is a wonderful project to be part of and to donate to charity.

“Making and donating blankets can be a wonderful outlet; it can be so rewarding.”

She said as a charity organisation it is very rewarding as it knits lives together.

Besides helping others Kiley said being part of the Knitwits is a great way to meet new friendly people.

“It also keeps your hands and minds healthy.”
