Local seniors treated to a special lunch

ELBA is on a mission to actively support the community they serve.

On April 15, Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy (ELBA) displayed love and compassion when they treated the senior citizens at Edenhaven to lunch.

They brought a selection of food and drinks for the residents to enjoy.

ELBA has made it a priority to give back to the community.

“This is part of our outreach initiative whereby we go to elderly homes and spend time with them through conversations and good food.

“Born out of a family foundation we strive to educate our players on the spirit of ubuntu and lending a helping hand.

“We hope to expand the initiative beyond Edenvale,” said coach Edson Makavan.

He thanked Jack Russell, Spar Dowerglen, H20 Waters and De Backery for their contributions and support towards the lunch.

Edenhaven’s Julie Koster said the initiative provides an opportunity for young people to keep in touch with the elders.

“Our residents were thrilled to have the team here they even assisted with setting up the table.

“To have a team like this is also special and they are giving back and that’s what we appreciate more.

“When you are young you don’t think you are going to get old one day and this is a reality check,” she explained.

The luncheon was also attended by Ward 18 Clr, Heather Hart, who praised the Edenvale community for coming together to make a difference.

The Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy spreads some cheer at Edenhaven.

“When the team approached me and said they wanted to do this, I thought it was certainly worth supporting and it is great that the players would give up their Saturday morning to come and cook for the residents here at Edenhaven.

“I am incredibly impressed with them. I love the work they do. I love the spirit they have and I hope the residents enjoyed their lunch.

“It is important as a community that we do not forget them,” she said.
