TB awareness raised in Germiston

She said the treatment for MDR TB has improved from the days when she was diagnosed.

The Bertha Gxowa Hospital hosted the World Tuberculosis (TB) Day observations on March 23.

World TB Day is observed annually on March 24 to create awareness of the infectious disease and the effectiveness of adhering to treatment which can help prevent the spread and achieve a cure.

The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko lead the World Tuberculosis (TB) Day observations at Drieziek informal settlement in Orange Farm on March 24.

Gugu Ngema shared her story of dealing with TB and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR TB).

At the Bertha Gxowa Hospital on March 23, the Department of Health and Wellness also rendered a basket of health services including TB screening and testing, HIV testing, oral health, high blood pressure, diabetes screening and mental health services, as well as Sassa and Department of Home Affairs services.

The attendees partook in aerobics and wore orange t-shirts to raise awareness.

Gugu Ngema shared her story of dealing with TB and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR TB).

MDR TB is caused by TB bacteria resistant to at least Isoniazid and Rifampin, the two most potent TB drugs.

These drugs are used to treat all patients with TB disease. TB experts should be consulted in the treatment of MDR TB.

Ngema said the treatment for MDR TB has improved from the days when she was diagnosed.

Jabulile Chauke, a nurse in the TB focal clinic, said more than 4 400 people get infected with TB every day worldwide.

“We advise people to continue taking their medications and never interrupt medication.

“Early detection and treatment, are important. One person can affect 14 people a day with TB,” said Chauke.

She advised people to do more research on TB to stay informed.
