With continuous water interruptions plaguing the city, the Ekurhuleni metro advises that residents keep their taps closed to prevent erroneous billing due to a ‘glitch’ in the system.

In a statement, Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the metro said that air trapped in the pipes, passing through the water meters could cause the meter to tick over, as if water is passing through the mechanism.
“Because the city uses mechanical water flow meters, the flow measuring devices turn and measure usage of liquid, but may also be turned by air flow,” said Dlamini.
“Due to this metering glitch, some residents have stated that they have received increased water meter readings despite not having water.”

He states that residents must ensure that all taps are completely closed during outages in an attempt to prevent possible faulty charges.
“Unattended taps could further lead to unnecessary water wastage or risk flooding one’s property,” he said.
