National shutdown: SAPS in Bedfordview, Edenvale and Germiston confirm areas are “quiet”

Primrose SAPS keeps a close eye on government infrastructure

The SAPS in Germiston, Bedfordview and Edenvale reported that areas are quiet with no incidents reported in reference to the national shutdown held today.

Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson Sargeant Lillian Modiga and Edenvale SAPS spokesperson W/O Jacob Mashile reported both precincts are monitored.

“Members are patrolling the area with the help of security companies, CPF and other law enforcement agencies whilst also conducting normal duties,” said Mashile.

Primrose SAPS spokesperson Sgt Styles Maome said officers are focusing on informal settlements and Primrose CBD. No incidents have been reported.

“We are keeping a close eye on government infrastructure like substations as well as shops, cellphone towers and so forth,” said Maome.

The Elsburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Daphne Phooko reported at 09:30 on Monday that no serious reports had been received in the Elsburg precinct and that the areas are being monitored closely.

Germiston SAPS spokesperson Const Maxwell Mabunda said together with security companies and EMPD members, they are patrolling the Germiston areas.

“This morning we found tyres on President Street and there was a peaceful march by a few EFF members in the CBD. For now, things are quiet and patrols continue,” said Mabunda.

On March 18, Bedfordview CPF in conjunction with SAPS, 1 Track, Mamba and CORTAC as well as Edenvale CPF removed 126 tyres from Barbara Road in Elandsfontein, which is part of the Bedfordview precinct.

Edenvale CPF spokesperson Fiona Pickett said they are monitoring the entry and exit points to Edenvale and Greenstone areas since the early morning hours on Monday.

“Several factories in the industrial areas are not open, while some shops and malls are doing business as usual. Home Affairs and the licensing department are open,” said Pickett.

She said activity was reported in Thembisa with burning tyres used to block off some roads.

“Alexandra and Bramley areas saw a peaceful protest led by a small group on Louis Botha Road. Sandton saw a small group march on Old Pretoria Road in Wynberg/Bramley,” said Pickett.

She said in Midrand, people gathered on New Road in Carlswald.

“Law enforcement reported that roads are now clear for travel.”
