Simmer and Jack landfill catches fire again

The City has temporarily closed the site for investigations and clean-up operations.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) temporarily closed the Simmer and Jack landfill site after a fire broke out on January 25.

The security personnel notified the city and the ward councillor at about 22:00 of the fire.

“Our investigation has confirmed that the fire came from the eastern slopes of cell six, the site facing Driekhook,” said CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

 

Simmer and Jack landfill site is temporarily closed for investigations and clean-up operations after catching fire on January 25.

The city’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services extinguished the fire.

“There were no fatalities or injuries during this isolated incident,” said Dlamini.

“Our DEMS officials fought the fire swiftly and ensured that the blaze did not spread to residential households.

“We again urge residents to be cautious during the heat wave and to practice fire safety precautions.”
