Rest-a While Service Centre in Primrose hosted a fitness morning session for elders with trainer Liezel Hanneman.

The sessions are held every Tuesday at the centre to keep members fit and healthy.

On October 5, the centre also hosted a safety talk for the elders.

The centre manager, Trudy de Jesus Carreira, said they saw a need to stress the importance of health and safety concerning the elders.

“The safety talk also emphasised safety tips when using a gas stove, especially now that we are faced with load-shedding,” said Trudy.

“We are planning similar sessions in the future. Should anyone be interested in attending please contact the centre,” she said.

Liezel, as a cancer survivor, shared her story with the crowd during training, adding that exercises helped with the recovery process.

She advised the audience to eat healthily and practice the moves she taught them during training at home.

“It is important for the elders to exercise because it not only prolongs their lives but it also improves their energy levels, strength, flexibility and balance,” said Liezel.

“We also did shoulder blade squeeze to strengthen postural muscles and stretch the chest.

“Sit up straight in your seat, rest your hands in your lap, and squeeze your shoulder blades toward one another.

“Focus on keeping your shoulders down, not hunched up toward your ears and hold for a count of three to 10 seconds. Release and repeat a couple of times.

“The feedback from the elders has been positive thus far. We will be working on more exercises,” said Liezel.
