Heritage celebrations held at local care centre

On three mornings a week, the programme assists pensioners so that they can remain in their own community for as long as possible.

Rand Aid’s Thembalami Care Centre celebrated Heritage Day with the ‘gogo’s’ from its Zamokuhle outreach programme.

On September 23 the smell of traditional food filled up the care centre’s kitchen as friends and staff came together.

“Dressed in their cultural attire the gogos made the food, they provided all the ingredients and cooked the meal,” said Thembalami manager Esme van der Walt.

Thembalami provided spinach and pap and ice cream and use of the kitchen.

“It was wonderful to see the gogos have so much fun and celebrate the day in style,” said Esme.

Run from Lombardy East-based Thembalami, the outreach programme assists elders in nearby Alexandra, River Park, East Bank and Lombardy east.

It provides a platform for them to meet and socialise with other members of the community and allows for the transfer of skills.

Breakfast and lunch are also provided, which enables participants to further socialise while meeting their nutritional needs.

Through the programme, elders are empowered on topics like elders’ rights and educated about ageing and chronic diseases faced by the elderly.
