The multi-departmental law-enforcement operation comprised the metro police and city officials from the departments of environmental health and economic development.

Some of the key areas of focus during the blitz was compliance with trading by-laws, including informal trading.
Traders are expected to acquire trading permits before they can trade in the city.

The city has built trading stands for small businesses, including stalls built in Swazi Inn, which was one of the areas targeted by the operation.

Those who want to use trading spaces along the streets of the city must apply at the nearest customer care centre.

“Applications must be accompanied by a certified copy of the applicant’s ID and the proof of residential address,” he said.

Trading permits cannot be transferred or borrowed from one trader to another trader.

“There have been complaints that traders do not observe by-laws and today we decided to do something about this situation.

“We discovered that some traders operate on the pedestrian walkways and this is unacceptable because it then interferes with the free movement of people,” Moseki said.

The MMC has vowed that the EMPD will keep monitoring the city’s streets to ensure that the laws are complied with.
