Germiston runners prepare for school championships

Twelve-year-old Khumalo Mathunyane said preparing for a cross-country marathon needs dedication and hard work.

Six runners from the Cool Running Athletics Club qualified to compete at the South African Schools Cross-Country Championships.

The championships will be held at the Walter Sisulu University, Postdam Campus in East London, on October 1.
GCN caught up with two of the athletes during practice at the Germiston Stadium.

Tumi Kotswane, from Elands Park High in Bedford View to represent Gauteng at the South African Schools Cross-Country Championships.

The Grade Seven learner ran seven competitions this year.

Coach Thulani Sibeko said the young runner has been consistent throughout the year.

Tumi Kotswane was delighted to have received her Gauteng colours recently. She has been training hard to keep fit.

“It will be my first time partaking in the competition, so I am excited,” said the Primrose resident who will be representing Elandspark School in Bedfordview.

“I recently competed in cross-country on a club level, which was tough because we competed against quality athletes from different areas.

“I expect the school competition to be tough but we hope to bring the gold home or at least make the top five,” said Tumi.
