It has competed in major basketball competitions the City of Ekurhuleni has to offer, including the OR Tambo Soncini Games.

As Women’s Month wrapped up, the club celebrated women in sports by launching an all-female netball club, the Germiston City Netball Club.

Pontsho Leepo, from Lambton, is the brains and visionary behind the club.

She said the basketball club coach Seaparo Ramaube has been supportive of her dreams of one day starting a netball club.

“When I approached Seaparo about the idea of starting a team, he gave me the go-ahead immediately.

“I saw that netball in Germiston is dying. Netball provides a place where girls can build their sisterhood and encourage one another,” she said.

“The netball club is going to compete in the league next season. We are looking for new players and coaches to join the team.

“We have the juniors, open and social teams, from 10, 16, and over 21 years respectively.

The social teams are where we allow mothers and retired players to come and have fun by training with us or training us.

“Training sessions for open are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 16:00 until late. For social teams, we train on Saturdays and Sundays.

“We are inviting teams for friendly matches at the Germiston Stadium.

“For physical fitness, we do squats, yoga and other exercises. Teaching a girl how to play netball has been an amazing journey because I have played netball as well. I want the girls to play professional.

“I obtained my school colours while I was in Grade Four. I broke a 15-year record at Colin Mann Primary School, where I was the second girl to play at the Gauteng championships after Bongiwe, who played for the Proteas team.

“Afrikaanse Hoërskool Germiston gave me a school bursary where I had to study without paying fees but had to perform in sports.

“I competed in all school-level competitions.

“It was an experience for me because I learnt how to manage both life and academics. I won trophies, medals, and certificates.

“The highlight of them is the best sportswoman of the year award. I would love to be a referee and do my grading,” said Leepo.
