The taxi industry is known to be a male-dominated field since its inception.

“Over the years we have seen women taking the front seat behind the steering wheel,” said Khumalo.

“Slowly women have infiltrated the industry and with the introduction of more transport services we have seen female drivers also capitalising on the opportunity of being part of the transport industry.”

Khumalo was behind the steering wheel until 2017 when she decided to quit and become a taxi marshall the following year.

“I was transporting passengers to Edenvale, Eastgate, Thembisa, Germiston and Alexandra among other places,” said Khumalo.

“I love working in the taxi industry and we need more women taking up this space. We need more women in this industry,” she said.

“Young men in the industry view me as their elder. I give them life lessons and they respect me like they would respect any marshall,” said Khumalo.

Since 2018 she has been a taxi marshall at the Germiston Taxi Rank controlling the Thembisa queue.
