‘Make sure your vehicle’s number plates meet legal requirements’ – EMPD
Displaying incorrect number plates could lead to a fine and drivers are reminded that ignorance will not hold as an excuse when caught.
Motorists are advised to ensure that the number plates attached to their vehicles are legal and approved by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).

EMPD media liaison officer Katlego Mphahlele explained that in South Africa, all vehicles are required to display a front number plate and rear number plate both displaying the vehicle’s registration number.
How do you know if the number plates on your vehicle meet the requirements? Here is the EMPD’s quick guide:
• Number plates must have a SABS stamp on them and must have a lifespan of five years or longer.
• Number plates must be affixed to the front and rear of a vehicle.
• Number plates must be secured with four-millimetre screws, to ensure that it is not easily detachable.
• Number plates background must be in line with the stipulated road traffic laws.
• Number plates must be clearly legible and visible.
• Number plate must be in an upright position or within 15 degrees from such.

According to the National Road Traffic Act, 1993/1996, Regulation 35(1) – a vehicle that displays a number plate that does not comply with the SABS specifications – SABS 1116, shall be issued a summons by a traffic police official with an R200 fine.
