Bedfordview paddler excels at VLC

Numerous paddlers enjoyed the opportunity to get fit and participate in the various marathon distance races.

Bedfordview resident and paddler Robert Hamer took to the water when he participated in a variety of races that prepares paddlers for the selection of the Gauteng Canoe Union’s team.

On May 29, Hamer and Ryno Armdorff competed in a marathon race and the final selection race for the team that was held at Victoria Lake Canoe Club.

The duo completed it in 2:11 hours and were the fourth veteran aged paddlers to cross the finish line.

Hamer, who enjoyed the opportunity to race, doubled up with Armdorff after his partner, from the earlier races, could not join him for the final selection race.

Gauteng Canoe Union’s public relations media liaison Jennie Dallas said numerous paddlers enjoyed the opportunity to get fit and participate in the various marathon distance races.

Wayne Saunders and Bedfordview resident Robert Hamer at the marathon race hosted at Florida Lake Canoe Club on May 15. Saunders and Hamer can be seen closest to the bank arriving at the portage.

She said the races which were 20km in distance included a portage.

Portages require paddlers to take their boats out of the water and run a short distance while carrying them before getting back into the water and continuing paddling.

Gauteng Canoe Union’s team will represent the union and the province when it competes at the SA Marathon Championships in KZN in June.
