Schools encouraged to become compliant

According to the National Environmental Health Norms and Standards for Premises and Acceptable Monitoring Standards for Environmental Health published in terms of the National Health Act No 61 of 2003, schools should be inspected at least once a year.

With the start of the school year, schools in the City of Ekurhuleni are encouraged to contact the environmental health offices to have their premises inspected by the City’s Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs).

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said EHPs inspect school premises to ensure the safety of both learners and school staff.

According to the National Environmental Health Norms and Standards for Premises and Acceptable Monitoring Standards for Environmental Health published in terms of the National Health Act No 61 of 2003, schools should be inspected at least once a year.

Inspections comprise:
• Water quality monitoring
• Compliance with food safety standards for schools handling food
• Waste management including health care risk waste
• Compliance of structure with the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act 103 of 1977
• Availability and compliance of toilet and wash-up facilities as per the provisions set out in the National Building Regulations and SANS 10400

School personnel or members of the governing body may contact the City’s environmental health offices on 011 999 2970.
