The sewage was reported to have been flowing for almost two weeks before the metro attended to it.
One local daycare centre was also affected by the spillage.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the department promptly responded to the call immediately after it was logged through the call centre.

“It must be noted that attempts to unblock the sewer line had failed due to foreign objects that were disposed in the line. Then the job was referred to the hydro-blasting unit team,” said Dlamini.

He added that there has been an in-flask of sewer related complaints due to stormwater ingress into the sewer lines network and also challenges of disposal of foreign objects in the sewer system.

“As a result, teams have been split to increase the footprint and promptly respond to other similar complaints although some have been allocated to contractors to assist.

“We discovered in this case that fat covered the entire sewer line diameter. Investigations continue into this matter,” Dlamini explained.
