The Hoërskool Alberton Grade 8 learner twisted his ankle earlier this year during practice, which forced him to watch his team from the sidelines.

“There are so many aspects of the game that I love and I would do anything to get back to the court. I started playing basketball earlier this year when I finally got the opportunity. I love the sport,” said Phuti.

He added that from the sidelines he had time to mentally prepare himself for what the future holds for him.

“When I got injured my mom was there for me. Now my leg has healed. I am looking forward to joining any team.”

Owahalalalela Phuti looks to score.

He dreams of one day playing for the Golden State Warriors NBA team.

Phuti trains every weekday either at school or at Germiston Stadium.

His favourite young player is Mikey Williams, an American high school basketball player.

“Like me, he was told to stop playing basketball but he didn’t,” said Phuti.
