Elders left in the dark

“I have been calling Ekurhuleni almost every day but I do not get assistance.

Despite residents casting their votes in the hope of better services, these same residents of Germiston are still experiencing frustrations with power faults and failures reported weeks prior to elections.

Gordon Basell (75) from Germiston South has been experiencing low-voltage issues since October 14.

“I have been calling Ekurhuleni almost every day, but I do not get assistance. It costs me to phone them every day,” said Basell, during a telephonic interview.

“I have a leg problem that prohibits me from moving a lot. I can’t even boil water,” he said.

John Flexney, another resident, said his power went off on October 30 and it has not been restored.

“We have been calling and received no help. It has become ridiculous to live in Germiston,” he added.

“Since the beginning of the year, we go three to four days without power. The bills always come back double on electricity, how is that possible? We are without power for days.”

When GCN contacted Flexney on Thursday, he said the officials came to fix the issue but it tripped soon after they had left.

“It is not stable, and who will pay for the damages if the electricity damages our equipment,” he said.

GCN requested comment from CoE by November 8 at 10:00.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
