Girls take to the greens

“I started this initiative to expose girls to new experiences because I want to offer the opportunity to find out who they are and know that the world has a number of opportunities and different things to offer,” said Vuyi.

October 11 is marked as the International Day of the Girl Child.

The day recognises girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

It focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years but also as they mature into women.

Local businesswoman Vuyi Hlatshwayo from VFH Packaging hosted an outing for girls on October 5 to Germiston Golf Club as part of her initiative to inspire girls and expose them to different things.

“I started this initiative to expose girls to new experiences. I want to offer them an opportunity to find out who they are and know that the world has several opportunities and different things to offer,” said Vuyi.

She said if girls can be offered opportunities and be effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world, both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers.

She said they were happy Germiston Golf Club welcomed them and was willing to share an experience with the girls.

“The girls didn’t even know what golf was so it was an exciting experience for them so the aim of the day was accomplished. Instead of them sitting at home or getting involved in mischievous acts, I feel it’s important to keep their minds occupied with different things that can widen their horizons. Maybe we might get a golfer out of the girls,” said Vuyi.

She thanked the club for its willingness to host the girls and make the day exciting.
