The City of Ekurhuleni announced the re-opening of Rietfontein and Simmer and Jack landfill sites, following temporary closure.

In July this year, the Simmer and Jack Landfill Site was closed.

Member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for Environment Resources and Waste Management Services Makhosazana Mabaso said, “It’s all systems go now that Rietfontein landfill site in Kwa-Thema and Simmer and Jack landfill sites in Germiston are back to being fully operational.

“We have put systems in place to ensure the smooth operation in the facilities and service providers have been appointed to manage the two facilities to maximise the delivery of waste management services in the city,” said Mabaso.

As of October 1, all municipal waste removal trucks, private trucks and general members of the public will once again enjoy the service of dumping waste at a landfill site closest to them.

“During the closure of these two landfill sites, patrons were utilising Weltevreden landfill site in Brakpan and Platkop landfill site near the N3 highway in Heidelberg.

“In addition, work to normalise operations at the Rooikraal landfill site near Dawn Park in Boksburg is at an advanced stage towards completion and operations are anticipated to resume at the beginning of November 2021,” said Mabaso.
