The Flames National Blackball Pool League started its new season with a fun-filled fund-raiser on August 29.

Speedball was first on the agenda and got the teams pumped and ready to kickstart the day.

Last season’s top-of-the-log team, Poison, took the winning time of 1.41 seconds.

There is a definite revived interest in blackball pool, with a total of 10 teams playing in the league from Flames Pub and Grill.

The highlight of the day was the fund-raising match between Lucas Venter, four-time eightball pool champion ranked eighth in South Africa, and Clarence Goveder, national blackball player.

Venter didn’t break a sweat beating Goveder 7-1 and went on to challenge other league players, with only a few managing to beat him at a race to two.

Clarence also went on to challenge members of the league and dominated the table.

Former doubles league champions Wilma Matthee and Venter played match after match, challenging any doubles teams willing to take them on.

The day ended with a braai and a friendly blackball competition. Ronell Snyman organised the day.

“All funds raised go towards the players representing the club at the National Blackball Federation (NBF) South African Championships at Gold Reef City in October,” said Snyman.

“In the women’s team, we have Matthee, Juané David and Nikki Bamping and in the men’s team Aron Donohue will be representing the club.

“For the first-year players, we have Bilal Haniff and Matthew Claase playing in the NBF social division. We wish them all the best.”
