Pool players to host Elsburg fund-raiser

Eastern Ladies to fund-raise prior to the Pool Nationals in Western Cape.

Eastern Gauteng Pool invites the community to the Farmers Market with a twist fund-raising event at Elsburg Stadium on August 28 from 09:00 to 15:00.

The event is aimed at raising funds for 12 Eastern women’s pool players who are heading for the nationals later this year.

Gerda Lottering, Eastern Gauteng Pool treasurer, said there are at least a total of 86 players who will participate in the nationals from all pool divisions.

“Playing the sports is costly. There is no government funding and each player needs at least R11 000.

“We are raising funds to send 12 players to Worcester, Western Cape, to compete in the nationals. The players will then get a chance to be nominated to represent South Africa in the world championships to be held in England.

“Any player selected for a regional or provincial team must have played 50% of his or her eight-ball league games in a region before being considered for trials and selection for the nationals.

“Pool South Africa (PSA) will select teams at all national tournaments as per the selection criteria to take part annually and the WEPF’s World 8-Ball Pool Championships. All costs towards sending players to any national or international event are from the player or team’s own cost.”

Women’s team manager Ronell Snyman said they have a total of 26 junior players and need more young players for early development.

“It is a friendly sport. I play it with my daughter and she has been playing since she was 14.”
