Homestead residents without power

Faulty cables are a problem at Homestead

Homestead residents are fed up with power outages.
Ward 92 Clr Graham Gersbach recently tended to concerns about electricity outages between Barbara Road and Ruphill Street in Homestead.
Gersbach said residents were without electricity from July 29, only to be restored on August 4.
“I engaged with the energy department to enquire about what could have been the cause of the outages.
“There have been a series of power outages, with reports starting at 21:00 on July 29 in Homestead, which was reported. Power was not restored.
“One of the municipal officials said there is a persistent cable fault which they were struggling to locate.”
Gersbach said workers had to put in a bypass cable at 34 Ruphill Street, as the faulty cable runs under the house.
He said he still awaits further feedback from the energy department as technicians try to find a permanent solution to restore power to the affected Homestead properties.
Tersia van der Merwe, a community member, said although the power went out on July 29, the municipal truck was only seen on Saturday.
“The guy, when approached by residents, said he will return to the site as he had to check something in one of the boxes, but he never did. There were two houses without electricity and after the technician left many houses had no power.
“We have food in our fridges that need electricity, but it always takes so long to fix the power,” said van der Merwe.
GCN sent a request for comment to City of Ekurhuleni on August 5, requesting comment by 10:00 on August 6.
At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
