Ekurhuleni officer killed during looting

Unrests in Ekurhuleni results in loss of police officer's life.

The EMPD commissioner Isaac Jabulani Mapiyeye appealed for order after an EMPD officer died and another was hospitalised following incidents of looting in Katlehong last week.

“The incident occurred during the mass looting of Sam Ntuli Mall in Katlehong.

“The officer died as a result of injuries. This is after an ambulance could not get access to the scene of the incident due to road closures. The police were responding to information that protestors were flooding the mall.

“This is when criminals opened fire on them while they were monitoring the situation and trying to restore stability.

“The deceased officer was based at the Zonkezizwe precinct and served as a metro police officer for 12 years.

“It is extremely unfortunate that we have lost such a dedicated member of staff who loved serving the people,” said EMPD spokesperson, Chief Supt Kelebogile Thepa.

“His colleagues who witnessed the incident have been provided with the necessary professional support.”
