Councillors visit CCC to assist

Councillors met with residents to assist with service delivery enquiries directed at the Germiston Customer Care Centre (CCC).

Councillors of Wards 93, 42 and Ward 21 visited the CCC to meet and assist residents.

Clr Geoffrey Mthembu said councillors have been visiting the centre regularly for the past two months.

“This is a monthly programme. We engage with customers and residents on several service delivery issues,” said Mthembu.

“We take their complaints and escalate them to the chief whip office and request that the complaints are looked into.

“We have helped out with complaints about electricity, the illegal connection of electricity, illegal dumping and housing issues. Some of the people we encounter have been without electricity for at least three days or even more, and bear in mind that electricity issues cut through the city especially during this time of year.

“There is also a concern about shack fires, especially during winter, with a recent incident reported at Germiston Marathon informal settlement where 10 shacks were destroyed,” said Mthembu.
Clr Frans Mgomane added that the fires are mostly caused due to the use of candles and paraffin stoves.

“Another pressing issue we are faced with is illegal dumping resulting in environmental hazards and rodents,” said Mgomane.
Electricity outages affect most wards.

Clr Musa Nkosi said that although Ward 42 received a new transformer, there is concern that it will soon be overloaded.

“The solution is to electrify the informal settlements. At least it will stop the illegal connections.”

All the councillors applauded those who continue to pay their bills despite service delivery concerns.

James Mbazima from Parliamentary Constituency Office in Germiston said, “People steal electricity every day. As a result, this leads to the municipality failing to buy or replace faulty transformers because people do not buy electricity in the first place.

“Another issue is that the municipality outside the Germiston CBD does not collect the waste regularly resulting in rubbish everywhere. The failure to maintain street lights also leads to crime.”
