Raising Legends honours community builder with award

“The biggest success in life is the contribution you have made towards the success of the people around you,” said Mashego.

The Raising Legends Initiative presented Robbins Mashego (26) with a community builder award on May 1 to promote a spirit of volunteerism and nation-building by acknowledging and promoting the contributions to the upliftment of South African communities.

The Olifantsfotein resident took home the Community Builder of the Year 2021 Award. The Community Builder of the Year category honours heroes and acknowledges their efforts to improve the quality of life in their communities in fields such as education, wellness, sport and recreation, climate and crime prevention.

“I was nominated as a community builder and through the voting systems obtained 7 340 votes, which put me in first place in my category and the highest throughout all categories,” said Mashego.

“It was an awesome feeling. I’ve always dreamt of being nominated for and winning an award at the highest level of South African football, but after my car accident put me in a wheelchair it shattered that dream. But here I am now, the recipient of a prestigious award in a different sphere. “The biggest achievement in life is helping a young child know his or her purpose in life. Purpose inspired me. I love football and it gives me chills every time I’m associated with it. But nothing excites me more than seeing someone prosper in life, especially if I could give a helping hand. That’s just who I am. Community builder is just a title, but building is who I am.

“The biggest thing I would like to improve in Thembisa is to alleviate poverty. The more we work together towards getting more families out of poverty the better for Thembisa. “I hope to leave a legacy of a changed community because I don’t believe money is the medium by which one should measure worldly success. “The biggest success in life is the contribution you have made towards the success of the people around you,” said Mashego.
