Lions bring back gold

“This wasn’t only a great achievement for the players but for the academy as well.”

Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy (ELBA) brought back gold after competing in the Ekurhuleni Basketball Association tournament at Germiston Stadium. The two-day tournament was played on April 24 and 25 and saw the academy’s Jeremie Luvayika named most valuable player.

“Overall, the tournament went well. The u-18 team, the Cubs, performed well,” said co-founder of ELBA and coach Edson Makavan. “This wasn’t only a great achievement for the players but for the academy as well.”

Makavan said the victory boosted the morale of the junior players. During the tournament, the Lions played six games and were undefeated.

Co-founder of ELBA and coach Byron Pinheiro shared Makavan’s excitement.

“This is quite a milestone for the academy, as this is the first important tournament that ELBA has won,” said Pinheiro.

“We have won other tournaments but not one of this magnitude. It shows we are moving in the right direction,” he said.

Luvayika said it was an honour to receive the award after the tournament.

“I’m grateful. I am glad I am in a position to represent the academy and show others the hard work the coaches have invested in us.”
