High-speed chase ends in two arrests

The value for the stolen items was estimated at R55 000.

Two men were arrested for residential robbery, housebreaking and theft on Main Road, Fishers Hill, on April 19. Primrose SAPS communications officer Sgt Styles Maome said officers were on patrol when they received a complaint of theft with detention.

“On arrival, the police found members of the community and the CPG Security personnel with the two suspects, whom they handed over to police.”

One of the suspects had sustained injuries to the upper body and was taken to hospital under police guard. CPG security released a statement, saying their security control room received a panic activation from a resident in Solheim.

“The resident stated there was a house robbery in progress across the road from them. All units in the area immediately responded to the address. Upon arrival, one of the intervention units spotted a white Nissan NP200 bakkie leaving the street; the resident confirmed that the vehicle was involved,” read the statement.

A high-speed chase ensued, with the security officers pursuing the suspects. “The suspects realised they could not get away, so they stopped the vehicle and ran in different directions.”

According to CPG, the one suspect ran into a nearby residential area and jumped over walls to try to escape. A Main Road resident who witnessed the chase said the suspect jumped over a wall leading into one of the backrooms of apartments.

The witness said the suspect kicked the door open to gain entry into the backroom, leaving his bloody T-shirt outside the room. Inside the house was a young lady and infant.

The lady told GCN she was not aware the man gained entry into their backroom. “I heard the commotion, then I heard police and security officers knocking at the door.” The officers asked to gain entry into the backroom, where the suspect had hidden under a bed. Both suspects were apprehended with the help of a vigilant resident.

Maome said the vehicle with the stolen property was also recovered. “The suspects were handed over to SAPS for further investigation. It is alleged three males stole a computer toner, a TV, a DStv decoder, bank cards, jewellery, a toaster and a laptop.

“The other suspects proceeded to another house nearby, where they found a pensioner and ordered her to sit down. They started loading a TV, keyboard, bedding and two cellphones into a white bakkie. “They also demanded the family’s car key before they left with it,” said Maome.

Maome said during the chase, one suspect drove away in the family car. The value for the stolen items was estimated at R55 000. The arrested pair will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon, while a manhunt for the remaining suspects continues.
