Small businesses make the most out of Easter festivities

Germiston couple Yolisha Asman and Ridwaan Govender were one of the small local businesses selling Indian food at the Junction 21 indoor market, Easter Chocolate Festival.

The Easter holidays saw many families out and about, looking for somewhere to get together while other families folded their sleeves up and opened their small businesses to cater to the Easter festivities.

Germiston couple Yolisha Asman and Ridwaan Govender were one of the small local businesses selling Indian food at the Junction 21 indoor market Easter Chocolate Festival.

The couple started a samosa bar after the hard lockdown.

“Lockdown affected us all, we had to find other streams of income.”

In June 2020, we started selling frozen samosas through the ordering system,” said Yolisha.

“My partner and I are real foodies who have fine-dined and travelled to different countries. We felt there was a need for authentic South Africa Indian food.

“We also realised a lot of Indian people from Durban come to Johannesburg to sell food but we are from Johannesburg and wanted to sell the Johannesburg curry, which is different to the Durban curry.

“We use the same spices but just in a different way.”

She added they also aim to educate people about Indian food, like the different bunny chows one can get.

Both founders were in the tourism industry and Yolisha decided to resign and work full time on the business.

We aim to reach a point where we can have franchises in every mall.

While small businesses like Yolisha’s enjoyed foot traffic, top chefs Nicolas van der Walt and Melissa Doubell demonstrated how to make chocolate showpieces and chocolate-molded Easter eggs.

Yolisha’s stall ran smoothly with the help of her family at the festival. No time was lost for them as they spent the Easter holidays together as a family.
