Come and play social tennis

The social sessions will be conducted by appointment.

Germiston resident and 2016 Gauteng East Tennis Association u-18 girls’ singles tennis champion Tadiwa Chipfakacha (20) and her coach, Loyiso Matsha, called on people keen to play social tennis to join them at the Germiston Stadium tennis courts.

“Tennis players are goal-getters and focused. That is why coach Matsha and I are willing to help. There is no payment,” said the tennis player.

Matsha said the social sessions are aimed at increasing the number of adults taking up the sport.

“Often tennis courts are converted to netball and basketball courts at stadiums.”

Chipfakacha would like to see maximum use of resources at Germiston Stadium. The coach said social tennis will have health benefits for the community.

“It is important to teach other young people the sport so they do not end up on the streets.”

Chipfakacha said she started playing tennis in 2013 in Zimbabwe because her class teacher was a tennis coach.

“He would take the whole class out and taught us how to play tennis.” This is when she discovered she was good at the sport. “It has become a huge part of my life. Only a few people play tennis in Germiston and I would like to teach a lot more people. People think tennis is not fun, that it’s all about competition but it is fun, especially when meeting new people at tournaments.”

The tennis player said she moved to South Africa to receive good coaching and better facilities for tennis. Her highlights include going to different places for tournaments and winning the Gauteng East Tennis Association games.

“I want to see myself playing in the US Open, ATP and other big tournaments.”
