Sassa grant-in-aid for the elderly, disabled and war veterans

According to a statement released by Sassa, it is concerned that most frail recipients of old age grant, disability grant and war veterans grant do not come to Sassa offices to apply for a grant-in-aid.

Sassa expressed that it cares about the conditions of some frail and elderly people not receiving the proper care which can contribute to many social ill factors in some communities.

One of Sassa’s primary objectives is to create awareness to teach families with frail grant recipients to come to any nearby Sassa office to apply for this additional grant meant to assist in paying extra medical bills, nutritional food and care services.

In order to qualify for the grant, the applicant must be in receipt of an old age grant, disability grant or a war veterans grant, and require regular attendance by another person owing to his/her physical or mental disabilities.

The applicant must not be cared for by an institution that receives subsidy from the state. Applicants who do not have an ID or birth certificate for the children involved in the application can still apply for a grant but must check with the nearest Sassa office on which alternative documents will be accepted for grant applications.

If the application has been approved, beneficiaries will start receiving payments within three months. The payments will be backdated to the day the application for the grant was completed.

The grant-in-aid will be cancelled if:

• The beneficiary is no longer in the care of another person
• The beneficiary dies
• The beneficiary gets admitted to a state institution
• The income or assets of the beneficiary improves significantly and they no longer qualify in terms of the means test.
