KAC’s annual school shoe challenge

Chairperson of the athletics club Hloni Motloung said they will continue with their annual collection of school shoes on December 31 and the 31km virtual run.

It is that time of the year again when Katlehong Athletics Club embarks on their School Shoes Drive to support underprivileged and destitute learners returning to school in 2021.

Chairperson of the athletics club Hloni Motloung said they will continue with their annual collection of school shoes on December 31 and the 31km virtual run.

“The introduction of the virtual run allows people from around South Africa to participate in this good initiative.”

He added 2020 has been a challenging year with the country going into lockdown.

“Losing lives due to the Covid-19 pandemic, having races cancelled, and seeing the introduction of virtual races and companies downsizing workers during this uncertain period, was tough. However, we are in this together.”

Motloung said December is the time to reflect on the year that has been.

“It is the time for families, friends to reconnect, travel and for people to recoup. It is also time people use to think about future plans, finances, education and health.

“It is in this spirit that we continue to ask you to spare a thought for those underprivileged and destitute learners returning to school next year.”

“The club has started collecting school shoes and raising funds. The virtual run will also go towards buying school shoes.”

Last year, on December 31, 91 pairs of school shoes were donated and R15 000 raised from the running community, according to the chairperson.

“We hope to make a similar impact next year.”

Motloung added school shoes are a symbol of pride and give confidence to young learners knowing that they can walk to school in comfort, as opposed to barefoot.

“Shoes are also a vital protective barrier between our children’s tiny soles and Africa’s rough and unforgiving terrain.

“We believe that a new pair of shoes should be tough enough to protect a young child’s feet whether it be on the playground, on the sports field or even walking home in the middle of winter.”

A minimum of R50 may be donated or a pair of school shoes.

“With this donation, you’re welcome to join us for a nice and easy 10km, 21km and 31km virtual run. Let’s continue to make a child love going to school.”

To participate in the virtual challenge run and tag #KACschoolshoechallenge.

“Join us and make a difference as we close down 2020.”
