“Firefighters from Germiston central fire station responded to the scene. On arrival, backup was called as the entire backyard was covered by flames from the burning paper,” said William Ntladi, the district manager media liaison for emergency services.

“Specialised water transportation equipment was brought to the scene to enhance copious and sustainable water supply from Germiston lake. Warehouse and office blocks were already under threat on arrival but intervention prevented the flames from spreading across the entire structure.

“High voltage electrical power lines were a threat to the crews as the fire was just underneath the pylons, producing intense heat. Strong wind made it difficult for the firefighters to contain the blaze as well,” said Ntladi.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined and will be investigated after the fire has been extinguished.
