Remembering OR Tambo

The theme for this year’s commemoration is ‘Drawing on OR Tambo’s legacy to help fight global pandemics of Covid-19 and social injustices.

In memory of Oliver Tambo, the month of October was declared OR Tambo Month and the City of Ekurhuleni is hosting various activities throughout the month to honour the life and legacy of this struggle icon who was a resident of the city.

Oliver Reginald (OR) Kaizana Tambo was born on October 27, 1917.

He was a South African anti-apartheid politician and revolutionary who served as president of the ANC from 1967 until 1991. He died on April 24, 1993 and was buried alongside his wife Adelaide at the Tamboville Cemetery.

The city is home to the iconic OR Tambo International Airport which was named after this struggle icon in 2006.

Activities to be hosted by CoE to celebrate OR Tambo are:

• Thokoza Monument annual commemoration scheduled for October 16 at the Thokoza Monument.
• School learners writing competition scheduled for October 20. Entries are to be digitally submitted.
• Annual Adelaide and OR Tambo public lecture on October 27, which will be live-streamed from the OR Tambo Foundation.
• Wreath laying ceremony on October 27 at the Tamboville Cemetery in Wattville
• Adelaide Tambo’s exhibition launch on October 27 at the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct.
