Red Cross Elderly Home’s emergency appeal

Branch manager of the home, Barbara Jensen, said they need financial assistance to continue caring for their residents.

The South African Red Cross Home for the Aged Germiston Branch in Elandsvallei released an emergency appeal to the community and prospective donors.

Branch manager of the home, Barbara Jensen, said they need financial assistance to continue caring for their residents.

“The exorbitant municipal bill and the cost of nursing staff are priorities which we cannot ignore.

“Other consumable items such as paper towel dispensers, paper towels, soap dispensers, sanitiser, masks and gloves are also some of our needs.”

Opened in 1951 and situated on the corner of Rietfontein and Cornflower roads in Primrose, the home’s building was originally used by the manager of the Simmer and Jack mine.

Jansen spoke more about their challenges.

“Lockdown has impacted all our fund-raising activities. Regular supporters have not been able to assist due to the economic crisis facing the country as well as the restrictions on travel and visits.”

The legislation also prevented the home from admitting new residents for some time.

Once this was cleared up it was noticed that there were very few enquiries for new admissions.

“People are still hesitant to move into care centres while Covid-19 is a threat, especially to the elderly. The home thus needs to fill up to become financially viable again,” said Jansen.

The manager added a number of their residents are supported by their families to supplement the cost of their accommodation.

“Many of the family members are experiencing post lockdown financial difficulties. We invest time and resources in complying with the norms and standards as set out by the Department of Health.”

The home has received support from generous donors during this trying period to reduce the spread of the virus.

“The donor installed an access control mechanism which records daily temperatures. We also promote handwashing, sanitising, mask-wearing and social distancing.

“However, there is always more we can do given the resources. We humbly request your support while we deliver our humanitarian mandate to 45 residents.

“We are their home away from home,” said the manager.
