Elsburg community not satisfied by department’s performance

“Drug dealers are still flocking our streets and selling drugs openly like sweets. Unfortunately, law enforcement agencies have failed the community dismally.”

“The MEC was invited on March 6 and promises were made to the community of Elsburg to protect them and address the issues that were raised from that meeting.

“Up until today, nothing has happened.”

This statement was made by Elsburg community leader Prince Rulashe.

“Drug dealers are still flocking our streets and selling drugs openly like sweets. Unfortunately, law enforcement agencies have failed the community dismally.”

Gauteng community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko said at the meeting that was held in March that drug dealers and criminals cannot be roaming the streets of Elsburg freely, making residents feel unsafe.

She promised a joint task force made up of SAPS, the Gauteng Traffic Police Saturation Unit, CPF, EMPD and patrollers will be deployed to clean up Elsburg.

She also encouraged community members to establish street committees.

“The situation has not changed and as the community, we are not pleased. I urge the residents to take a stance and fight for our community,” said Rulashe.

“The drug and crime issue is a long-standing issue that has been a problem for the Elsburg community. We’ve had meetings after meetings, but we see no results. We need action and we need it now,” said Rulashe.

He said the community plans to host a march demanding that drug dealers leave the community.

The office of the MEC said the department has been delivering on the promises that were made during the meeting with the community.

“Mazibuko remains committed to finding solutions for the challenges raised by community members. Members of the community should not take the law into their own hands,” said MEC spokesperson Pinkies Numa.

“They should cooperate with law enforcement in ensuring their area is drug-free and safe for women and children.”

She said the department has been conducting operations in the area.

“There has been a number of arrests made in the area since March. There has been a joint task force from EMPD, SAPS and Gauteng Traffic Police Saturation Unit,” said Numa.

She encouraged residents to share information about criminal activities.
