The LamDel Residents' Association shared how the Lambton, Delville, Parkhill Gardens, Klippoortjie, Hazeldene and Hazelpark communities have pulled to together to deal with the impact of the pandemic

The pandemic has had a negative impact on society. The LamDel Residents’ Association shared how the Lambton, Delville, Parkhill Gardens, Klippoortjie, Hazeldene and Hazelpark communities have pulled to together to deal with the impact of the pandemic.

LamDel chairperson Lornette Joseph and Jakkie Janse van Vuuren, vice-chairperson, said there were a number of families affected by the pandemic.

“The lockdown has been difficult for everyone in different ways. As a community, we found ways to keep spirits up and motivate one another,” said Joseph.

“Via Whatsapp groups, we shared different things, from recipes to motivational quotes and just checking on one another.”

The residents’ association did not just share messages of support, they also fed those who really fell on hard times because of the pandemic.

Through the LamDel Neighbours In Need Project, the association was able to feed 596 people from April to August.

“This project started four years ago when we saw several families in our suburbs and neighbouring suburbs in need of food and clothing. When lockdown happened, we started getting lots of calls and messages asking for assistance. We were able to step up as a residents’ association and offer assistance to those in need in our community,” said Joseph.

She said the donations was from the community for those in need within the community.

“We received no assistance for the food or funds from government, council or political parties. This was all raised via the kindness of the residents and organisations in our area.”

Janse van Vuuren said the association is grateful for every donation they have received. Parcels were made for a family of four and meant to last for two weeks and included non-perishable items and fresh produce.

“We had a high demand and we wish we could help more. We are grateful we managed to help where we can,” said Janse van Vuuren.

LamDel thanked the businesses who opened their hearts to assist the association with donations.

They thanked Germiston SPAR and Lambton and Hazelpark Pick n Pay.

“We received 70 x 5kg bags of maize meal from the Pick n Pays, bags of fresh vegetables from Lambton Tactical Response (LTR) but also the donation of fruit, veg and yogurts from Siyabonga via the Din-al-view CPF.

“Dr Thereza gave us a donation of baby products and another resident from Alberton heard what we are doing and gave some baby products too,” said Joseph.

“Pick n Pay helped us with bread at a good price for the handout and the Germiston SPAR gave us groceries for the hampers at cost price. All of these were huge savings and for the cash donations too. We are humbled by how the community came together in times of need,” said Janse van Vuuren.

Joseph said they are proud of how the community has stepped up through this difficult time.

Joseph said LamDel Neighbours In Need project is running low on funds and she urged the community to continue supporting their efforts.

“Unfortunately, our food is running out and our funds have run out. We will continue as long as possible.”
