Germiston designer creates “Covid-19 outfit”

The comedian, poet, motivational speaker and fashion designer said he wanted to use his talents to create awareness around the pandemic.

Mosotho Mokoena (27), who usually is all about jokes, urged society to continue to adhere to social distancing and safety measures. The comedian, poet, motivational speaker and fashion designer said he wanted to use his talents to create awareness around the pandemic.

“People do not take the virus seriously,” said Mosotho.

The Germiston resident has thus created a lot of unconventional outfits.

“I have made outfits with newspapers, blankets and even dishwashing cloths. I like anything that looks different. People stop me and ask me to take photos when they see my Covid-19 outfit.”

The outfit makes Mosotho look like a pandemic task team member. His all-black outfit has a branded red, blue and black logo written Covid-19. The look consists of a black hat, tie, shirt, shoes, tailor-made bag and mask, all branded with a Covid-19 logo he created.

“I created this outfit as a symbolic remembrance of this historic pandemic,” said Mosotho.

Self-proclaimed Mr Covid-19 created the outfit to gain recognition from the public and spark conversation wherever he goes.

The creative born in QwaQwa Tsheseng, Pitseng Village in Free State, said he wants people to know Covid-19 is serious.

“I noticed a lot of people don’t want to wear masks and they don’t sanitise when they are in public transport or shopping centres. People do what they want to do as if life is carrying on as normal.”

Mosotho commended President Cyril Ramaphosa for the decisions he took when facing this pandemic.

Among other talents, Mosotho is a poet who had won poetry awards.

“I recorded my first poetry music album at Qora location, Idutywa in Eastern Cape under the guidance of Manani X-Vibe and Anele Mbokoma in 2018,” he said.

The hit song Seanamarena was virtually recognised for the Best Poetry award at the Mbashe Youth Awards in Idutywa, Mbashe Municipality.

Mosotho added his dream was always to meet Mzwakhe Mbuli, which he has already fulfilled.

“I asked Rudolf Monyela to help me meet up with this South African poetry icon. I was so excited, thanks Rudolf. Now I am part of Mzwakhe’s Mzansi Poetry Academy,” said Mosotho.

Mosotho said as a performer the pandemic has impacted negatively his income.

“It is has been hard but I am alive I am grateful because so many have died because of the pandemic,” he added.
