The Gauteng Department of Education has introduced the brigade programme for unemployed youth to be brought in to assist the department to curb the spread of the coronavirus at schools and government offices.

The brigade is responsible for screening anyone entering the school premises.

“This helps the teachers to focus on their own work,” said Thabo.

He said at the beginning many were not used to the new way of doing things, but are gradually adjusting to the new norm.

“Parents, learners and teachers are now comfortable in coming to the school as they now know we are here to make sure that everyone has the relevant resources to prevent the pandemic from spreading.

“We work together as a team and that has offered us an opportunity to learn. We also become acquainted with administration skills,” said Thabo.

He said this programme can one day play an important part in the school system.

“I’m passionate about my community and I’m always looking for ways to uplift. This programme offered me such an opportunity.”
