Elsburg SAPS under fire for apparent lack of service

"We no longer feel safe and we would like the station commander of Elsburg Police Station to tell us how many cases that were reported have been resolved and the turnaround time of closing the case."

Elsburg residents have lost their faith and hope in the police due to number of crime incidents in the area. This is according to Elsburg community leader Prince Rulashe who said the youth in Elsburg are shocked by the high level of crime.

“We are disgusted by the state of paralysis of our local police station in Elsburg and its non-functionality. Because of this we have seen incidents where residents take the law into their own hands and we daily witness lawlessness and anarchy,” said Rulashe. “We no longer feel safe and we would like the station commander of Elsburg Police Station to tell us how many cases that were reported have been resolved and the turnaround time of closing the case.”

Rulashe also questioned the number of pending cases that have not been resolved.

“The Elsburg Police Station has failed to do its mandate to protect and serve and residents are left hopeless.”

Elsburg Police Station spokesperson Const Daphney Phooko said the station is working with the CPF in the fight against crime.

“Police patrol the area day and night and we arrest those who are not abiding by the law. CPF members have been on the streets during this pandemic day and night to assist,” said Phooko.

“Since the lockdown started the police have been on alert and there has been more deployment of officers.”

“The Elsburg sector manager Sgt Erin Palmer and CPF Sector One are working hand-in-hand to make the residents of Ward 39 safe and secure at all times.”

Phooko said the station also conducts awareness campaigns in the community.

“The social crime prevention coordinator Sgt Rose Monageng conducted several awareness projects and outreaches with different churches especially in problematic streets and door to door safety campaigns.

“Even the liquor officer conducted operations in the ward,” said Phooko.

She urged the community to share their concerns and suggestions with the station.

“Make use of the suggestion box placed in the client service centre. Management of the station discuss these matters and give feedback to the leaders of the CPF,” said Phooko.

“We urge residents to report officers breaking the law.”
