Workers’ protest was illegal says SAPS (Video)

SAPS and EMPD officers made various attempts to disperse the crowd.

SAMWU municipal workers marched to the City of Ekurhuleni earlier this morning to demonstrate their frustrations with their employer.

The employees demanded a wage increase which they say was promised prior to lockdown. They further said that they have been working throughout the duration of the lockdown yet the municipality is refusing to give them the increase.

According Germiston SAPS communications officer, Const Maxwell Mabunda the march was illegal.

SAPS and EMPD officers made various attempts to disperse the crowd, using rubber bullets and a stun grenades.

After the crowd dissolved, some protesters went into the CBD and damaged streetlights and municipal bins on the sidewalks.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

Police officrs are patrolling the Meyer Street area and the rest of the city centre.

The City of Ekurhuleni is yet to provide a response to SAMWU’s allegations.
