Little ones, parents and the Primrose community will miss Annamarie Ferreira (69), well known as Auntie Bokkie, who cared for many babies and children in the community.

“She went for an operation to repair an aortic aneurysm on June 26, a day after her birthday,” her sister, Agatha Kloppers, told the GCN.

Annamarie died on July 10.

Gone but not forgotten

Annamarie will also be missed by community members who she helped during hard times over the years.

Her daughter, Quinette Leach, said every Tuesday Auntie Bokkie would leave food for people who recycle plastic in the streets.

“She always fed and took care of everyone. She would also feed the birds at school and at home. My mom was loving and caring towards everyone in her community.”

The staff at school used to call her Ouma.

“They all loved and respected her. Most parents would take their time to ask how she was and send her messages. The children always drew her pictures to show their love.”

Quinette shared more about her mom’s younger years.

“My mom’s dad was a mine captain at Simmer and Jack Mines and she was one of 10 children. She met my dad when she was 16 and they were married for 51 years,” said Quinette.

Her dad died in February 2019.

“She would always say, ‘any problem is not a problem if you can fix it’. I will miss her beautiful smile, her loving and caring personality and her positive nature.”

Agatha said: “We will miss Auntie Bokkie, especially the little ones who would run to her office in the afternoons for a sweet before going home.”

Annamarie is survived by Quinette and two grandchildren, Bronwyn and Barry.
