New lights to aid crime prevention in Katlehong

CoE spokesperson Themba Gadebe said this was part of the city's programme to make informal settlements habitable and restore human dignity by installing basic services.

Informal settlements with no electricity tend to be dark at night, making residents vulnerable to crime.

This resulted in City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) recently installing new lights to make Katlehong safer.

CoE spokesperson Themba Gadebe said this was part of the city’s programme to make informal settlements habitable and restore human dignity by installing basic services.

“The city has installed solar high mast lights in Tsietsi Phase Five, Katlehong. The solar technology provides a low-cost, low-maintenance lighting to communities.”

Gadebe explained Ekurhuleni experiences electricity grid overload in winter due to illegal connections and meter bypassing, resulting in outages in some areas.

“Renewable energy such as solar provides an energy source to communities without adding further load to the electricity grid.

“Residents are urged to protect this infrastructure as it is for their benefit, and other communities are also in need of the same infrastructure, provided through limited government resources,” said the spokesperson.
